The story of Saint Valentine goes a little something like this: (or at least the version of the story I know and love as the stories behind Valentine is all a little murky anyway so to each their own). 

One legend goes that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families so he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice and being a romantic fellow himself, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers secretly in the name of love. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. While imprisoned, Valentine himself sent the first "valentine" greeting to a young girl he fell in love with.  Before his death, he wrote her a letter and signed it "From your Valentine".
